If you are starting a garden or wanting to spruce up your existing one then enjoy these small, achievable suggestions for creating a bee friendly garden.
Year Round Flowers
Planting a summer garden is the go to for most novice gardeners however this method not only leaves a dull garden through the winter months but limits the pollinators food supply through their hardest season. Try planting flowers that bloom in different seasons throughout your garden and enjoy the pop of colour all year round!
Mix Up The Colours
While yellows and whites are bright and popular with the bees, try choosing an abundance of colours when picking your plants. Different bees like different flowers and may prefer a blue or pink flower as well. Planting native plants is also a great idea, especially when trying to attract the native bees. This is also a great way to see more native birds attending your garden.
Bigger Is Better
When planting your garden, try and plant groupings of plants along a garden bed. This grouping will attract native bees more easily as there will be an abundance of flowers and it will offer some protection and security while the pollinators are collecting.
Having a few flowers is better than having none so if this option isn't for you then that's okay! If you have little to no yard space or simply don't want to commit yourself to so much a few flowers in planters or pots will be fine :)
Welcome The 'Insect-icides'
Insects such as flies, ladybugs, praying mantis, lace wings and some wasps can be great at keeping away the pests. Keeping away from chemical pesticides creates a thriving environment for these natural predators as well as the bees. If you do need to use a pesticide, try to find one that is not harmful to the bees and steer clear of the flowers when applying.
