(And does it have to be crystal?)
Now I am pretty certain that you aren't going to say a spell and jump into a scene of Harry Potter; however, the movies aren't ENTIRELY wrong... in a sort of unrelated way.
While the battle between Harry Potter and Voldemort would have looked a lot less colourful and *epic*, the purpose is the same.
A wand is simply used to assist you in directing your energy. That's it.

Long story short, the magic is within you. When casting your energy or intention into a situation or spell, the wand simply guides that energy more precisely.
I do sincerely apologise for ruining any childhood dreams and disheartening those who may still be waiting for their Hogwarts acceptance letter...
You could get a wand carved from crystals where their metaphysical properties align with the kind of energy work you intend on doing, but let's be real, spirituality doesn't have to cost money. The whole premise is working with what you have, receiving gifts from and offering gifts to the earth - you could use a chopstick and carve your own sigils into it if that works for you and your practice.
At the end of the day, it's your practice; jazz up the wand, embellish it with sparkles and crystals, do whatever makes you happy! Just remember the magic is yours - the wand is merely a tool.
Remember,
Stay witchy, not bitchy.
